Gardai say that the search was part of an ongoing operation into dissident republican activity and organised crime.

Officers from the Special Detective Unit (SDU) searched the house on Harmonstown Road, Dublin 5.

“During the course of the search Gardai found three handguns. Three people were arrested, two males and one female — all in their 20s — and they are being detained in Blackrock Garda station under the provisions of Section 30 Offences Against the State Act 1939 as amended. The investigation is ongoing.” said Sergeant Brian Whelan of the Garda Press Office.

A juvenile was also to appear in court today in relation to the assault.

The 27-year-old man, a Polish national, died in hospital two days after he was assaulted at Newtown Industrial Estate.

The dead man was, according to Gardai, on his way to work in nearby premises. He was discovered on the roadway in the industrial estate with serious injuries. Gardai were called at about 5am on the night.

“A 27-year-old and a 20-year-old will appear before CCJ 2 Friday next, January 14. A 17-year-old appeared before Juvenile District Court 55, Smithfield earlier today,” said Sergeant Gerry Curley of the Garda Press Office.

“Over 2,000 residents sign my petition against proposed bus route changes on Northside,” said Aodhán Ó Ríordáin, a Labour councillor on Dublin City Council.

On boards.ie, one person under the name ‘snickerpuss’ said “I’m really shocked at the proposed Malahide Route. The 27 is now essentially the 42b… but isn’t increasing in frequency despite both being really busy routes.

The person added: “And it is bypassing Northside completely. This I find odd considering how many people (mainly older) from Darndale and surrounds use it not only to get to Northside but also the new Civic Centre which is on the Bunratty Road and holds the social welfare offices etc.”

The proposed changes to the Malahide Road buses, including the 17a, 20b, 27, 27b, 27x, 42, 42a, 42b, 43, 104 and 128 routes, can be viewed here. While the added changes to the Ballymun and Clondalkin areas, including the 13, 13a, 220, 51, 68, 69 , 76, 76a, 76b, and 210 routes, can be viewed here.

Consultation for the proposals for those area will close Sunday January 23.

Dublin Bus had said that its Network Direct project is aimed at increasing bus speeds by travelling more on Quality Bus Corridors, where buses do not get caught in congested traffic.

But as we reported before, Network Direct also includes large service cuts. When a Dublin Bus route was cut by 30% weekdays and 66% on Sundays, the company told Dublin Observer that this was an “overall minor frequency adjustment.”

Meanwhile, Dublin Bus says that changes to routes affecting Finglas, Ballyfermot, and other areas are due to take affect this month.

Swimming pools at Sean MacDermott Street, Crumlin and Coolock are to remain open for at least six months, the city manager has said.

Swimming pools at Sean MacDermott Street, Crumlin and Coolock are to remain open for at least six months, the city manager has said.

The Dublin City Council swimming pools were due to close in August if funds were not found.

With protests against the closures outside, councillors at the monthly meeting of Dublin City Council in April unanimously passed a motion supporting standalone swimming pools in the city until these were replaced by regional sports and leisure centres.

Welcoming the decision, Cllr Aodhan O Riordain (Labour) said, “This will give councillors the opportunity to fight for their survival again during the estimates process. The pools were due to close this summer”.

O Riordain claimed the move vindicates the stance of the Labour Party councillors who secured €600,000 in last years budget to prolong the opening of the pools, despite he said that the closures were presented to councillors as an immediate proposal only a few short weeks previously.

He added: “This funding which we secured allowed councillors the necessary breathing space to find positive solutions to save the pools in the long term, and we are determined to do so in the next estimates process. There is no circumstance where I would stand over a situation where three pools in disadvantaged areas would be closed and city management can be assured of my co-operation in finding a long-term solution to the issue.”

When the pools were threaten with closure in April, a group against closure, Save Our Swimming Pools claimed the pools in the city have been deliberately neglected, and promises that the standalone pools would be replaced by leisure centres were now unlikely.

Three council-run swimming pools in Dublin are to close in August unless extra money is found to run them.

Councillors at the monthly meeting of Dublin City Council on April 12 unanimously passed a motion supporting standalone swimming pools in the city until these were replaced by regional sports and leisure centres.

But city officials warned funding is only available up to August for the Coolock, Sean McDermott Street, and Crumlin swimming pools. Adding that user groups which have been approached to date were not in a position to “creditably” operate or fund the pools.

The motion also stated that the council should actively seek financial and grant aid from all funding agencies for assistance in the running and maintenance of the current pools

“It is particular important that we as a city are not made fools of and laughed at by closing three pools when this year we are supposed to be capital city of sport in Europe,” said Cllr Eric Byrne (Labour).

Cllr Larry O’Toole (Sinn Fein) reminded councillors, “As a council, we were the ones who did not find the money when setting the budget.”

At the time of the budget, €600,000 was set aside to run the pools for a six month period. City manager John Tierney said this funding was stretched out to last a further two months.

Councillors suggested a range of possible sources of funding, from the Minister of Sport and Lotto funding and community funds run by Dublin Bus and the GAA.

“The last thing we want to do is close swimming pools,” said Mr Tierney, pointing out that it had being a difficult budget and the compromise was to keep the pools open for six months, which is to be exceeded. He warned that the Government may ask local authorities to cut funding again in the coming year.

Mr Tierney said it would be “very difficult” to find funding.

He denied that the pools were being closed because they would not make profit, saying the council never expected to profit from this type of service.

Cllr Nial Ring (Ind) said he could not accept the figures of needed funding; saying a much lower amount of money was needed to run the pools. Although the city manager denied this, saying the councillor’s figures are wrong.

It was suggested by Cllr Bill Tormey (Fine Gael) that the “template” of the Garda Reserve could be used to good effect in running the pools. “Voluntarism in relation to security, voluntarism in relation to supervision.”

Cllr Aodhán Ó Ríordáin (Labour) said, “Not only will major plans for these areas go to the wall, now these swimming pools will too.”

Up to a hundred people protested outside City Hall on Dame Street, organisers of the protest said. The protesters were from community groups from the north inner city, Crumlin, and Coolock.

The groups, under the banner of Save Our Swimming Pools, claim the pools in the city have been deliberately neglected over the last decade, and maintenance was not carried out. Instead, promises were made that the standalone pools would be replaced by leisure centres as part of now-troubled public-private partnership deals.
