A train station with friendly staff and pretty flowers is what you’d expect to win Irish Rail’s best station award, but internet users have other ideas.

“It seems there is a bit of Wagner X-Factor style campaign going on here for Broombridge,” said Oliver1985, a boards.ie user referring to others saying they were voting for Broombridge Station in Dublin.

Broombridge is an unmanned, graffiti marked station located in a part-abandoned area between Finglas and Cabra on the Maynooth railway line.

Commuters who use the station report of regular destructive behaviour. Users say they see scrambler motorcycles being driven on platforms and burnt-out debris in and around the station. Train users also claim the area is a hotspot for trains being stoned or bricked.

Another user, Terrontress, said with hope: “Personally speaking, I’d love to see their press release if Broombridge won.”

However, attempts to make Broombridge the station of the year are unlikely to succeed as shortlisted stations are visited by a ‘secret shopper’.

“While as with all text and internet polls of this nature, orchestration of voting can occur, all votes for stations will be registered and shortlisted stations will then be assessed in the mystery shopper exercise as detailed on irishrail.ie,” said Barry Kenny, head of communications at Irish Rail.

Irish Rail’s best station awards asks commuters to rate stations on staff helpfulness, customer information, the station’s presentation, and staff appearance. Kenny said the company hopes overall that customers enter into the spirit of the awards, which are about rewarding staff who provide good service and encouraging improvement in customer service.

But all those who rate a station will be entered into the prize draw. Kenny said, “Customers who submit any ratings for any stations, positive or negative, will be entered into the draw for weekends away and for free travel.”

On the issues at Broombridge, Kenny said: “Regular customers of Broombridge will be aware that there is a significant anti-social behaviour issue in the immediate vicinity of the station. Over a number of years, we have undertaken works to improve the station or replace facilities, but regrettably these have been subject to repeated vandalism.”

He added: “Overall, there would have been times when these issues have been worse than they are currently, but we liaise with Gardaí in our scheduled meetings to address such problems as they arise in Broombridge or elsewhere.”

Elsewhere, there are plans to develop the unused land beside Irish Rail’s Broombridge station. The Railway Procurement Agency wants the site to be the terminus for the Luas Broombridge line from Stephen’s Green via O’Connell Street. If the Luas line gets planning approval in December, and is then approved by Government, the agency will build a depot and stop alongside the current railway station.

A railway order – planning permission for a railway line – has been lodged by the Railway Procurement Agency for a Luas tram line from Stephen’s Green to the Northside of Dublin City.

The planned line – named Luas Broombridge (Line BXD) – will extend the Green Line from Stephen’s Green to Broombridge, near South Finglas and new development at Royal Canal Park.

National media outlets have described the line as a “Luas link-up,” it will however also server large areas of the Northside of the city. And contrary to at least one report, the route of the line also seems unchanged since early last year when the Railway Procurement Agency (RPA) announced its preferred route.

Northside areas with stops including Broombridge, Cabra, Phibsborough, Broadstone where a new DIT campus is expected, and the Dominick Street / Parnell Street area of the north inner city.

The application includes 4.7km of double track and 2.5km of single track. A total of 13 stations are planned including six stations on the single line sections of track and one possible future station at Grangegorman.

In the city centre, trams are planned to run on street, but starting from the north west of the innercity trams are expected to run in a trench and under roads on the disused Broombridge railway alignment.

The railway order also seeks pedestrian access and lifts from Irish Rail’s Broombridge Station to the proposed Luas stop beside it, and vehicle access from Broombridge Road to the stations, including a set down area for buses, taxis and car, as well as bicycle parking.

A light railway depot to service and store trams is planned in the area beside Broombridge Station and the Royal Canal.

The draft railway order can be inspected from June 30 to August 13 at the offices of An Bord Pleanala on Marlborough Street, at Dublin City Council offices on Wood Quay, and at the RPA offices on Parkgate Street. Submissions can be made, with a fee of €50 to An Bord Pleanala before 5.30pm on August 13.

The project was planned to be constructed along side Metro North but this was recently ruled out due to a too high level disruption in the city centre, although some construction for the two projects is still expected at the same time. The RPA have been instructed to continue planning projects, including Metro West and the Lucan Luas, although funds have not been earmarked for these.

LUAS BROOMBRIDGE ROUTE AND STATIONS

Starting at the current Green Line stop at Stephen’s Green the line is to head north via Dawson Street, where there will be a stop. The line will split after Trinity College – the northbound line is planned to go up O’Connell St while the Southbound will go down Marlborough St, which runs parallel to O’Connell St.

In this section of the city centre six one-way stops are included: ‘Parnell’ (southbound only) on the south of Parnell Square, O’Connell St Upper (northbound only), O’Connell St Lower (northbound only), ‘Marlborough’ (southbound only) on the street of the same name, ‘Westmoreland’ (northbound only) on the street of the same name, and ‘Trinity’ (southbound only) on College Green.

The Luas route will require a planned public transport bridge close to O’Connell Bridge to link Marborugh St to Hawkins St to be built.

The two lines will then join again at Parnell Square. From Parnell Square the line goes up Dominick Street to the disused train station at Broadstone – there is a stop planned at both of these locations, ‘Broadstone – DIT’ and ‘Dominick’.

At Broadstone the relocation of the Dublin Bus and Bus Eireann bus depots was expected to be needed, although it is unclear if this is part of the current plan. At least some destruction of the depot building is planned.

The Luas line will use the disused Broadstone railway alignment. This trench will take the line under the North Circular Road, the Cabra Road, and the Fassaugh Road / Connaught Street.

Land is to be retained at the north end of the Broadstone depot for a possible future stop, not to be build with the rest of the proposed project, called ‘Grangegorman.’ A stop called ‘Phibsborough’ is to be placed between the North Circular Road and the Cabra Road, while a stop called ‘Cabra’ is planned just north of the Fassaugh Road / Connaught Street.

The route will then meet Irish Rail’s Maynooth line at Broombridge Station. From here the RPA say the line could extend again in the future to Finglas. Broombridge Station is beside the Dublin Industrial Estate (aka the Glasnivin Industrial Estate) and just over 600meters from South Finglas.

DublinObserver.com also have a Google Maps version of the route map available to view here.
