UPDATED: Green Party candidates concede in Dublin

Eamon Ryan, Ciaran Cuffe and John Gormley

At least three former Green Party TDs and candidates in the general election have conceded defeat.

UPDATE AT 7.32pm: Eamon Ryan has now also conceded according to NewsTalk, but party leader John Gormley refused to do the same on RTE One television.

On his party’s survival, Gormley told RTE: “What we have to do now as a party is lick our wounds, and they’re fairly severe wounds today.”

Ciarán Cuffe who was seeking a seat in Dun Laoghaire told RTE this afternoon that he’s not going to get a seat, while Paul Gogarty in Dublin Mid-West conceded on twitter.

Meanwhile, Eamon Ryan said that it is unlikey he would hold on to his seat, and tallies also predict that party leader John Gormley will lose his seat. Trevor Sargent is also reported to be struggling to retain his seat in North Dublin.

Cuffe tweeted this afternoon:

“Thank for all your support, congrats to winners, rebuilding Green Party, and campaigning for#GE16 has already begun #dunl

Paul Gogarty tweeted this morning:

“10% of tallies counted. All in my strong area. Loads of 2, 3, 4, which is comforting, but not enough No. 1s. I concede, with good grace.”
