Children’s play should be an election issue – City council

Dublin City Council have urged politicians to make play a priority in the general election campaign, with DCC saying that it is “crucial” that more facilities are provided for children in Dublin.

“There are over 800,000 children in Ireland” stated the DCC Play Development Officer Aine O’Brien. “One in four of these children are either overweight or obese. It is crucial that in all places where children gather we provide opportunities for a wide range of play activities, to ensure their well-being.”

Barnardos today launched their Children’s Manifesto– a campaign which encourages voters to lobby candidates for election to support children’s rights.

In the manifesto, Barnardos advocate a referendum on children’s rights and the creation of a new Department of Social Care to oversee children’s welfare and protection services.
